Here are some of my favorite shots from last month’s winter escape to the South Island. There’s always that packing dilemma: small camera for convenience or the trusty full-frame Sony for those moments I know I’ll regret missing. In the end, the full-frame always wins!
We arrived firstly in Queenstown, then drove further south and based ourselves in Te Anau for a couple of nights, using it as a home base for exploring Milford Sound (didn't fancy doing that as a day trip from Queenstown!). On the way, we detoured to Lake Mavora and hit the jackpot with perfect weather. This place is right up there with Mount Sunday as one of the most peaceful spots I’ve ever been. No traffic, no crowds (or any other people at all), no noise, no distractions – just pure tranquility. It’s where they filmed some of the final scenes of The Fellowship of the Ring. We’d planned a lakeside picnic but ended up eating in the car to escape a swarm of hungry midges!
We were very fortunate with the weather on the day we went to Milford Sound as well - a place that is known for being one of the wettest places in the world! The road out there is like no other. Constant jaw-dropping sights around even bend in the road. We also met lots of cheeky kea who liked to chew every bit of rubber on the car.
We squeezed in a visit to Moke Lake near Queenstown at the end of our trip. It was a freezing cold morning, but the lake was stunning and completely deserted. I can’t wait to go back and do the walking track around it one day.
All in all, another amazing trip to the South Island. If I lived there, my hard drives would be overflowing with landscape photos. I’d never be able to leave the house without my camera!
